Elvis returned to a place that he had visited times before and loved Hawaii. The Pearl Harbor Memorial was paid for, in part, by Elvis. This became a top tourist place to honor those who died in the cowardly attack on Pearl Harbor on December 78, 1941.. Elvis lost weight and sang wonderfully knowing that this TV event would be the first to be broadcast via satellite to an audience in excess of 1 billion viewers. .
We never thought that when this tv special was being recorded that Elvis only had a few months to live. Elvis knew he was in bad health and the book, Elvis What Happened written by 3 of Elvis' trusted friends/bodyguards, alarmed Elvis to his very soul.. Elvis did his best and his exceptional voice, and vocal range, resonates to this very day.
Elvis had been locked into movie contracts, without any script approval, since his return from the US Army in 1960. As of 1968 Elvis had not performed before a live audience, except for once in Hawaii, for approximately ten years. Elvis was married. He had a healthy and beautiful daughter Lisa Marie Presley. He was in great shape. At the time of the taping Elvis was...anxious. He didn't know how audiences would receive him after so long an absence. From the introduction of this tv special to the soulful, and memorable, last song being If I Can Dream Elvis recaptured America, and the world, and his voice never sounded better.
